About Emily
Cooking as a Way of Knowing
Emily has spent three decades moving through kitchens, markets, forests, and fishing villages — learning that the most important ingredient in any dish is the story behind it.
Emily trained formally in classical French technique before spending years eating and cooking her way through West Africa, the Andes, the Levant, and Southeast Asia. Not as a tourist — as a student. She worked in home kitchens, market stalls, and restaurant back-of-houses, learning from people who had no interest in trends and every interest in feeding people well.
Emily's Kitchen is the culmination of that education. It is a place to share what she has learned — not as a set of rules, but as an invitation to look more closely at what is on your plate and ask where it came from.
The philosophy
"I am not interested in food as performance. I am interested in food as knowledge — as the most direct way we have of understanding a place, a people, and a moment in time."
Every class, every catered event, every consultation begins with the same question: what does this dish know that we don't? The answer is always more interesting than the recipe.
